Taping basics

Every guide uses the same few techniques. Learn how much stretch to use, how to prep your skin, and how to apply and remove KT Tape so it lasts for days.

How much stretch?

No stretch

Anchors. The first and last 5 cm of every strip go on with no stretch at all.

Light stretch

Pull the tape gently so it's only slightly longer than at rest.

Moderate stretch

Pull the tape to about halfway between at rest and fully stretched.

Don't overstretch

Full stretch can irritate the skin and stops the tape working as it should.

Tips for best results

Apply an hour early

Apply tape about one hour before activity for the best adhesion.

Clean the skin

Wipe the area with rubbing alcohol to remove dirt, oils and lotions.

Trim body hair

Trim excess hair so the tape can grip the skin.

Tape on skin

Apply directly to skin where possible, especially the ends.

Round the corners

If you cut tape from a roll, round the corners so the ends don't catch and peel.

Remove gently

Peel slowly. Baby oil helps loosen the adhesive if needed.

How to apply any strip

1. Remove the backing

Tear the paper about 5 cm from the end by twisting and pulling, then remove that piece. For a middle start, tear the centre and peel back, leaving 5 cm on each end.

2. Apply the tape

Anchor the first 5 cm with no stretch, apply the stretch your guide calls for, anchor the last 5 cm with no stretch, then rub firmly to activate the adhesive.

3. Remove it slowly

Start at a corner. Hold the skin down with one hand and gently peel the tape back with the other.
